A general's prized mare and a shipwreck. A naval shipyard founded in 1854. Forty-thousand welders, torpedo makers, radiomen, and Rosie the Riveters securing our freedom through a Civil, a Cold, and two World Wars. Two winemakers now toiling to handcraft beer worthy of this historic island. Come visit our taps at the northern waterfront of the San Francisco Bay.
Many a former yardbird (the nickname given civilians working on Mare Island Naval Shipyard) has reminisced to us of discreetly (and often) hoisting a "hydraulic sandwich" on their lunch break. Beer is indeed food. Read Less

Admiral Rickover sent the USS Halibut, one of his treasured Mare Island nuclear submarines, to search by periscope for a "cable crossing" sign in Russian. This was the Soviet's Sea of Okhotsk, where we were certainly not welcome during the Cold War. The Soviet Navy's key communications cable was found, the Halibut hovered at 400 ft, and two covert divers attached the recording device; top secret operation "Ivy Bells" had begun. For the next 20 years, subs from Mare Island returned monthly to swap the recording tape.
We dedicate this cold fermented lager to the steely resolve of Mare Island's Cold War submariners. Read Less

Have an idea for a new gyro range gear housing jig? Drop it in the Benny Suggs box! Back in the day, the Yardbirds at Mare Island Naval Shipyard were encouraged to provide Beneficial Suggestions for improving operations at the shipyard. Those with worthwhile ideas were rewarded (could be a couple hundred bucks, or as a former Yardbird told us, an ashtray... she doesn’t smoke). In 2018, we gave our Yardbird beer club members an opportunity to give us some suggestions. Suggest a beer style, and then assist us through the entire brewing process in making it. This red ale turned out to be a very beneficial (and delicious) suggestion indeed. We suggest you try it. Read Less

This is our finest porter, aged in former whiskey and pinot noir wine barrels for six months, blended, and then bottle-conditioned to perfection in a historic bomb shelter on Mare Island. Intense, with hints of chocolate, coffee, fresh-milled grain, vanilla spice, toast, and a distant, elegant echo of fine whiskey, this limited-production reserve brew has balance yet heft on the palate, with creaminess derived from extended barrel and bottle aging. A California Common for the “Common Good”. During WWII, Mare Island's military and civilian workforce came together to raise almost $76 million in war bonds – enough to pay for every submarine built at the shipyard. They did it with style too, rallying bond sales through the Mare Island “Follies” – lively vaudeville meets Bob Hope USO style shows, featuring live dance bands, slapstick comics, and the occasional Hollywood star. Of course, more than a few pints were poured too. Speaking of pints, when you buy a “War Bond” on tap at any of our three taprooms, we donate a portion to three local non-profits. It all started with secret meetings and impromptu discussions on the way to work at the shipyard. Then in 1961, this small group of African-American workers – who came to be known as the Mare Island Original 21 – took action. Risking their jobs and livelihoods, the group filed a complaint with Washington, D.C. detailing decades of discriminatory labor practices at the shipyard. Their actions led to sweeping change at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, inspired similar reform across the US, and influenced the Civil Rights Act of 1964. A commemorative stone honoring their efforts rests on Mare Island near our brewery – and with this brew, we toast to their legacy. Read Less
